The long-awaited designs of the Doonside Station upgrade complete with lifts have been revealed.
Residents along with the Blacktown Advocate have fought for more than a decade to secure funding for accessibility upgrades at the station.
In November last year it was announced funding had been secured from the NSW Government.
And now, a year on, designs for the upgrade have been revealed.
Transport for NSW said the upgrades will make the station “more comfortable and user-friendly with commuters”.
Commuters are now being invited to have their say on proposal.
“The proposed upgrades would make using Doonside Station easier for all customers but particularly for commuters with limited mobility, parents and carers with prams, and customers with luggage,” Transport for NSW said.
“We’d love to hear from as many locals as possible to ensure we can deliver the best possible outcomes for the entire community.”
The key feature of the proposed upgrade is the construction of four new lifts. They will connect the station entrances to the existing footbridge and station platforms and there will be continuous canopy coverage over all platforms.
New stairs will also be installed on platforms 3 and 4, with upgrades to existing ramps, footbridges and stairs on platforms 1 and 2.
There will also be two new accessible parking spaces on Cross Street and one new accessible parking space on School Parade.
New bicycle hoops will be installed next to the Doonside Road and Cross Street station entrances, a new family-accessible toilet will be established within the existing station building, and improvements will be made to CCTV and lighting across the station.
Blacktown Advocate spearheaded the campaign for accessibility upgrades for many years with a breakthrough finally being made in November 2020 with the funding pledge.
Feedback on the plans can be provided up until 5pm on Friday November 19 by calling the Project Hotline on 1800 684 490 or by emailing projects@transport.nsw.gov.au.
