Man shot dead by police officer in Seven Hills

It’s alleged a man who was shot dead by police in Seven Hills in Sydney’s west on Tuesday charged at them armed with a knife and an axe.

A man armed with a knife and axe has been shot dead by police in western Sydney.

Police allege the man, 45, came at them with the weapons before he was fatally shot by an officer at a home on Bulah Way, Seven Hills around 11.20am Tuesday morning.

Police said a number of rounds were fired at the man and it was not yet clear which officer fired the fatal shot.

Officers were at the address inquiring about an outstanding warrant.

Police will allege they were involved in a physical confrontation with the armed man before he was shot.

Police performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived, but he could not be revived

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will also be subject to an independent review.

No police officers were physically injured during the incident.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon, North West Metropolitan Region Commander, said the officers involved in the operation were “all quite upset”.

She added: “Inside the premises they were confronted by a 45-year-old man who was armed with a knife and an axe.

“Officers let out a number of shots and unfortunately the man collapsed.

“There were four officers inside the premises but I can’t yet confirm who fired shots and how many shots were fired.

“As to be expected all the officers involved in that incident this morning are all quite upset.”

Neighbour Dale McPherson said the man who had been killed did not live at the house and was visiting an aunt.

“I know his aunty, she’s an Aboriginal lady and she mentioned he was visiting,” Mr McPherson said.

“I have seen his aunty and her son around a bit. They are nice people.

“I don’t like anyone to be shot.

“You don’t know what the circumstances were and they might have had to shoot him but a taser would have been better - but they might not have been able to do it that way.”

A critical incident team is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

A number of residential streets have been closed, with diversions in place.

The police corden takes in all of Bulah Way and much of Best Road, from Cornelia Road down to Ross Street.

The location of the shooting is around 500m from Hills Sports High School.
