City of Sydney have taken on the challenge to break the world record for the most people eating dumplings in one location — but they need your help.
The competition for ‘The Largest Yum Cha Meal’ will kick off at 11am on February 5 at Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park, where 1000 people will eat dumplings together.
The world record attempt is part of Sydney Lunar New Year Festival, where dumplings are considered a traditional must-eat food on New Year’s Eve.
City of Sydney have teamed up with WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda and My Kitchen Rules to attempt the challenge.
To break the record, participants will be served four dumplings and must eat at least two to secure the title.
The current record, set in Melbourne in 2013, stands at 750 people.
WSFM’s Amanda Keller said it would be “one of the tastiest challenges we’ve ever done”.
“I can’t wait to tuck into some delicious yum cha with hundreds of our listeners to celebrate the Sydney Lunar Festival,” she said.
Host Brendan Jones said he was always told there was no such this as a free lunch growing up, “and what better way to prove those naysayers wrong than with a world record free lunch,” he said.
“The more the merrier.”
City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the Guinness World Records attempt is a great way for people to join in on the fun of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
“Sydney is widely regarded for its array of high quality, diverse cuisines from across Asia, and dumplings are always a favourite, ”Cr Moore said.
Official Guinness World Records adjudicators will monitor the event.

The Sydney Lunar Festival runs from February 1 to 10.
