A desperate bid to see a Sydney Metro West station established at Zetland to fight growing congestion concerns has local and state representatives issuing a battle cry to the NSW Government.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and Heffron state Labor MP Ron Hoenig are joining forces in their calls for the multimillion-dollar infrastructure project to link Zetland to the Sydney CBD and stations in Sydney’s west.
More than 61,000 residents are expected to live in the Green Square development precinct, which was expected to be the largest high-density residential project in the country.
Cr Moore said City of Sydney public transport analysis had revealed the majority of peak hour bus and train services were running at or over capacity, while 343 bus services also averaged seven minute delays.
“The 370 (buses) connecting to the University of NSW regularly run 20 minutes late across the day; and buses operate around walking pace through Green Square, sometimes as low as 5km/h,” Cr Moore said.

“City staff are currently working with Transport for NSW staff on a Green Square-Waterloo Transport Action Plan, following a meeting I had last December with the Transport Minister.
“The plan looks at key opportunities over the next five years to reduce congestion and improve public transport.
“A new metro station at Zetland, as part of the Sydney Metro West project, will be essential to manage increasing demand for public transport. Sydney Metro West is designed to extend to Zetland, but a station there is not guaranteed.”
Mr Hoenig said he has been a consistent advocate for a metro across the electorate.
“For six years now, my message has been that the only solution to Zetland’s transport challenges is a high speed underground metro,” he said.
“I have repeatedly told the parliament and the public, the location of the Sydney Metro station at Botany Road, Waterloo, was an enormous missed opportunity to service the dense and rapidly growing suburbs in the Lachlan precinct, the Epsom Park precinct, the Green Square Town Centre, and the North Rosebery Precinct.
“Every major city in the world has a network of underground metros, even former Soviet states, and yet Sydney does not.
“If we don’t get the planning and the infrastructure right in our community, these urban renewal projects will be a failure.”
