The historic Sutton Forest Meat Company building is set to be transformed into a $63m hotel in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, with planners claiming it will support the city’s late-night economy.

Located on George St, Haymarket, developer and landowner Samprian’s plans include a 31-storey mixed use project, 29 levels which will be used for a hotel with 335 rooms, food and drink outlets, reception areas and function rooms.

It will also include a range of amenities such as a gym, swimming pool, hotel bar, back-of-house facilities and two levels of basement parking.

The development, currently on public exhibition, will be designed by the firm Architect And, which was “commended on the finesse of the tower”.

A City of Sydney report recommended the development for approval, saying it would bring a host of improvements to the area.

“This proposal will facilitate the redevelopment and adaptive reuse of the Sutton Forest Meat Company building heritage item,” the report stated.

If approved, the project would be one of the latest additions to the Central Sydney Planning Strategy, which sets the city’s planning vision to ensure the CBD continues to be Australia’s leading economic centre and location for workers, residents and visitors.

The George St plans indicate a partial demolition of the existing building, with community consultation open until December 13.
