O’Connell Precinct: City of Sydney approves 309m, 72-storey tower fit for 9000 workers

A local council has formally backed the development of what will be the city’s tallest-ever building in hopes to transform Sydney’s skyline.

City of Sydney Council unanimously voted to support the development of new a tower in central Sydney – The O’Connell Precinct – which will boast 72 storeys, accommodate space and amenities for 9000 workers and will be located in the heart of Martin Place.

Spearheaded by firms Dexus and Lendlease, the commercial building will match the height of Sydney Tower at a staggering 309m and is touted to be a “powerhouse” in strengthening Sydney as a global city and economic force.

The proposal looks to amend the current building site which is a 36 storey office tower, and podium known as the ‘Wintergarden’, as well as five other commercial-use buildings including the state heritage listed 19-21 O’Connell Street building.

According to a planning proposal submitted to City council, the project will provide an iconic office tower that will optimise employment opportunities and capitalise on access to the future high-speed Sydney Metro rail network at the site’s “doorstep”.

A Lendlease spokesman said the plans would help “unlock” the CBD and transform perceptions of commercial work spaces.

“The proposal for the O’Connell Precinct represents a significant opportunity to unlock a key site within the CBD of Sydney to increase the supply of world-class premium and sustainable workplace to meet the future demand of tenants,” the spokesman said.

“Subject to the necessary approvals, the proposed development has the potential to transform this area of the Sydney CBD into a vibrant mixed-use, retail and commercial workplace destination of exceptional quality with new public spaces.”

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she wanted to see the skyline rise by building “iconic” and sustainable buildings that fit the future commercial, residential and recreational needs of the city.

“Following extensive consultation and three years of block-by-block research, we created a blueprint for planning and increased height done well – allowing the city to grow with new skyscrapers that will also ensure sunlight continues to shine on treasured public spaces,” she said.
