Football fever is heating up in Sydney as sports giant Adidas unveils plans to create two of the largest advertising billboards in Sydney’s CBD for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Two 14-storey tall ‘building wraps’ would be created on the side of the Maritime Trade Towers at Barangaroo in as part of a $445,000 development plan lodged to the City of Sydney.

The signs are aimed at celebrating Australia’s role as co-host of the World Cup that will see Sydney host 11 matches – including Australia’s opening match and the coveted World Cup final.

Adidas Australia – which is an official partner of FIFA – has plans for the building wraps to feature Mary Fowler and Caitlin Foord who are both brand ambassadors for Adidas.

“The (billboards) captures the dynamic movement that is unique to football and celebrates the games that are being hosted in Sydney on the world stage,” the plans state. “It is Adidas’ intent for the installation to inspire future generations of female footballers.”

The signage would take a full two weeks to install and would remain in place for two months. If approved by the council, it is proposed for the installation to commence on June 26.

The signs would measure some 29m in width and 46m in height and would be visible from areas including the Western Distributor and Darling Harbour.

Building wraps at the site have previously been created for major sporting events including the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The proposal is among several temporary developments planned in the city to herald in the World Cup.

In The Rocks, Fox Sports has released a $1.4m proposal to build a range of new temporary broadcasting facilities for the July to August event.

Plans to the City of Sydney have revealed spectators will be able to catch the action around the company’s broadcasting facilities at Dawes Point Park, Hickson Rd, Hickson Rd Reserve and Campbells Cove.

Crowds are expected to range from a handful during on off-air time and upwards of 500-800 during key match broadcasts.

Fox Sports state the locations of the facility would showcase Sydney’s iconic sights to millions of viewers around the world.

“This project is an exciting opportunity to promote women’s sports at the highest level and showcase Sydney, NSW, and Australia to an estimated 130 million-plus international viewers,” the plans state.

“The tourism and revenue opportunities generated by the level of viewership will significantly benefit not only The Rocks area but also Sydney and Australia as a whole.”

The facilities also include an ‘Instagram wall’, digital billboards, a 5m high cable bridge linking the Hickson Road Reserve to Dawes Point Reserve broadcasting zones at Campbell Cove.

Both proposals remain under assessment by the council.
