Smoke from planned hazard reduction burns from fire agencies and land managers is expected to settle in parts of Greater Sydney and the Central Coast over the next few days.
Heavy smoke from these types of fires which were ignited around Sydney on Sunday has settled across the eastern suburbs impacting residents in the area.
The smoke is set to clear later Monday morning, however further burning is planned for today which will see smoke remaining in parts of Sydney and the Central Coast until midweek.
NSW Health states children, older adults and people with heart and lung conditions are the most susceptible to being impacted by air pollution and heavy smoke.
“If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice,” they said.
“Asthma sufferers need to follow their Asthma Action Plan and take their relieving medication where necessary. If symptoms get worse, seek medical advice. Further advice is available from the Asthma Foundation website.”
To stay safe during the hazard reduction burning you can monitor the NSW RFS hazard reduction page for information about planned burns and smoke advisories in your area, keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home and remove washing from clotheslines.
You can also ensure pets have a protected area along with driving slow and with your windows up and headlines on if you’re driving through a smoky area.
It’s recommended to not dial triple-0 to report that it is smoky, only call during an emergency.
