Australia's growing drug crisis

A man had to be given CPR and is now on life support after his boss at a Sydney Night Noodle Markets stall allegedly supplied him with MDMA, a court has heard.

Guowei Shao, 40, has been charged with supplying a small amount of prohibited drugs after police allege he supplied MDMA to an employee early on October 17 which caused the man to become unwell.

Shao, from Sunshine West in Melbourne, is the operator of a Korean potato twist food vendor which participated in the recent Night Noodle Markets in Sydney.

Shao appeared before Magistrate Clare Farnan at Downing Centre Local Court, where he applied for bail through his solicitor Mr Nguyen.

“That person is now on life support and their medical situation is now unknown,” Ms Farnan said.

“What’s alleged is that he provided some of his staff, including this person in hospital, with what’s alleged to have been MDMA and one of these people has suffered that significant adverse reaction.”

Ms Farnan acknowledged Shao had taken “significant steps” to aid the man after his ill health became obvious.

“That included performing CPR and taking him somewhere so medical assistance could be obtained,” Ms Farnan said.

“It’s a tragic set of circumstances but that should not necessarily result in the refusal of bail.”

Shao, who is an Australian permanent resident with no prior criminal history, was granted conditional bail to reside at his Sunshine West address and surrender his passport.

He will be required to attend Downing Centre Local Court in person for his next court date on November 2 which will be for plea or mention.
