A former regional rugby league player blocked a bathroom exit door while a mother was filmed being brutally bashed in a Casino club toilet.

Jahmali Mundine, who previously played for Northern Rivers rugby league, faced Downing Local Court for sentence after she pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm while in company.

The 20-year-old, from Ultimo, was sentenced to a two-year conditional release order without a conviction.

Court documents state Mundine blocked the bathroom door and watched on as a mother was brutally bashed in a Casino RSM Club toilet on June 23, 2023.

Victim Jamikka Binge-Olive died during a medical episode five weeks later. Authorities declared her death was not linked to the bashing.

Mundine played a lesser role in the attack compared to the two co-offenders, the court heard.

The 27-year-old’s death prompted 150 people to march through Casino demanding “justice” and her family have publicly questioned the medical care Ms Binge-Olive was provided.

Police facts state Ms Binge-Olive was about to leave the woman’s bathroom when a then 21-year-old co-offender, who must be referred to only as ‘ZZ’ due to a court order, pulled her to the ground.

ZZ was holding Ms Binge-Olive by her hair and using her other hand to punch her repeatedly in the face, police facts continue.

Mundine “briefly” pushed the door closed and stood against it to prevent any patrons from entering or leaving the bathroom, police said.

Someone stood on Binge-Olive’s ankle, preventing her from getting up while a voice yelled: “Rip her.”

ZZ kicked Ms Binge-Olive in the face and body several times, while then 21-year-old co-offender Shakaya Drew, recorded the assault.

Two women pushed into the bathroom and tried to stop the assault with Mundine’s help, but after they left the offender closed the door again.

The venue staff helped Ms Binge-Olive after the incident. She was bleeding from her nose, lip and eyebrow and had blood on her clothing.

Mundine gave evidence in court on Thursday stating she had consumed cocaine and up to ten alcoholic beverages that night.

Mundine’s lawyer Mary Keaney said her client was now a dental assistant and was not as heavily involved in the attack compared with the two co-offenders.

“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time and made bad decisions,” she said.

Magistrate Michael Blair said Mundine was standing by the assault holding the door closed but acknowledged she tried to discontinue the fight.

ZZ was previously found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm in company and intimidation. She was sentenced to a 20-month intensive correction order with 300 hours of community service work.

Co-offender Shakaya Drew was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm in company and was sentenced to a 14-month intensive correction order.
