The top five worst roads on the Central Coast have been revealed.
The NRMA has released the region’s results from the 2019 Rate Your Road survey, with more than 1300 people participating in the survey from both the northern and southern suburbs of the coast.
Participants were asked to rate roads based on their condition, level of safety and congestion. More than 23,000 people had their say on the state of NSW roads, with the first wave of results released this week. Here’s the countdown of the top five worst roads.
5. Carters Road, Lake Munmorah
Carters Rd was highlighted for congestion, receiving 34 votes.
This busy Lake Munmorah street has been at the centre of endless campaigns for a traffic solution.
The street is choked by traffic from two primary schools, two high schools and a preschool, which have been forced to stagger afternoon knock-off times to avoid any further chaos.
4. Woy Woy Road, Kariong
Safety issues saw Woy Woy Rd at Kariong score 37 votes.
There have been many accidents over the years on this notorious road, with residents calling for more safety measures. Heavy traffic and wet weather are particular risk factors on the road which winds its way down to Phegans Bay.
In 2017, works were announced for an upgrade to the intersection of Woy Woy Rd and Langford Dr, the scene of 16 accidents in five years.
3. Terrigal Drive, Erina
With traffic in and out of Erina Fair, drivers heading to local schools and the beach, it’s no wonder Terrigal Drive scored 50 votes for congestion.
Most afternoons are a nightmare on this road, with traffic often held up at the roundabout at Erina Fair and Chetwynd Road.
2. Del Monte Place, Copacabana
A narrow and windy street, Del Monte Place at Copacabana received 67 votes and comes in second on the list of the coast’s worst roads.
Safety issues were highlighted including the width of the street and narrow bends, with drivers unaware of what is around the corner., narrow bends
There’s often cars parked along the road, which makes life more difficult for traffic.
1. The Pacific Highway at Wyong and Ourimbah
When it came to congestion, the Pacific Highway at Wyong and Ourimbah received the highest score with 179 votes.
Wyong’s Pacific Highway is a huge congestion zone almost seven days a week, with the two lanes merging into one.
The Pacific Highway at Ourimbah has improved, with the upgrade between Ourimbah St, Lisarow and Glen Road, Ourimbah completed by the Roads and Maritime Services in November 2018.
The RMS is now working on a $178 million upgrade to the Pacific Highway between Ourimbah Street and Parsons Road at Lisarow.
The NRMA said they would use the survey responses to lobby the State Government for positive action in eliminating major transport pain points on NSW and ACT roads.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury thanked the coast community for the overwhelming response to the campaign.
“These surveys work. In the past, Wattle Tree Road at Holgate was rated highly as a hotspot of concern on the Central Coast, with residents telling us through our surveys that pedestrian safety around the school was a great concern,” he said.
“Since the NRMA started its campaign to improve that stretch of road in 2015, the road has
received funding from Federal and State governments to upgrade the road and improve safety.
“These survey results now demonstrate that congestion in particular is of great concern to Central Coast motorists using key roads like the Pacific Highway and Terrigal Drive.”
