UPDATE: NSW Electoral Commission responds to fears the integrity of the state election could be compromised after 15 desktop computers were stolen from a pre-poll office at Erina.
Police were called to the new office and pre-polling booth at the former First Choice Liquor store at 199 Central Coast Highway about three weeks ago following reports of a break-in.
The Express Advocate understands up to 15 desktop computers were stolen in what police fear was a targeted raid.
The break-in has mystified local police who are at a loss as to why the computers would be stolen from the newly established electoral office given it is surrounded by a largely industrial area with far more valuable items that could be easily on-sold.
Two doors up is the Slimes Boardstore surf shop and a scooter store next door.
The NSW Electoral Commission has today issued a response confirming the break in.
“The NSW Electoral Commission confirms there was a break-in at a Central Coast election manager’s office in late February where computers were stolen,” the statement read.
“The matter was reported to police in the usual way. There was no electoral roll material on the computers and we have no concerns that the election has been compromised.
“The investigation sits with police and any further inquiries should be referred to NSW Police Media.
“This theft is not related to the technical issue with our electronic mark off system at early voting centres yesterday.
“The NSW Electoral Commission does not issue public statements in respect of every incident that occurs during the course of an election.”
