A Lake Munmorah family has been left shattered after doting parents Matt Mulhall and Kathryn Singleton drowned at Frazer Beach on the NSW Central Coast.

Friends and family have rallied around the couple’s three children, including Mr Mulhall’s 13-year-old daughter and their two children aged 10 and five.

Mr Mulhall and Ms Singleton were spotted by onlooking struggling in the waters at Frazer Beach on the afternoon of February 8.

Two men bravely rushed to save the couple, however they were unresponsive when pulled from the water and died at the scene.

It is understood Ms Singleton became caught in a rip and Mr Mulhall jumped in the water to help her. The couple’s youngest daughter was at the scene and cared for by onlookers.

Friend Chelsea Wilson’s GoFundMe fundraising page, launched just three days ago, has raised almost $35,000 for the couple’s funeral and children.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has helped us out over the last week,” Ms Wilson wrote.

“We’ve truly been blown away by the generosity of everyone here on this page and those who have helped in person with acts of support large and small. We’re going to leave the fundraiser open for now and see what sort of nest egg we can put together for the kid’s future. “Thank you again, please know that we’re truly humbled and grateful for every contribution.”

Ms Wilson said the money would go towards ongoing care of the couple’s son and younger daughter who both have disabilities.

“We are looking to raise money for the cost of the funerals and also to help care for and support these beautiful children that have been left behind,” Ms Wilson wrote.

Mr Mulhall and Ms Singleton had been together for more than 11 years. In 2019, Mr Mulhall launched a business Newcastle Business Intelligence.

In 2016, the couple appeared in a Daily Telegraph article relating to severe epilepsy in children.

They spoke of the decision for their son, who was suffering 200 seizures a day, to have surgery to remove half of his brain and improve the quality of his life.

“If we didn’t do it he’d be a complete vegetable, never walk, never talk, not even recognise his mum and that’s if he even survived past the age of two,” Ms Singleton said at the time.

“We are so lucky the surgery was available, most definitely, without it we wouldn’t have our smiling bright eyed boy.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Mr Mulhall and Ms Singleton, who are described as a “beautiful couple”.

Kim Crowther took to Facebook to pay tribute.

“Kathryn to have overcome so much in life and still be the happiest person in the room, your beautiful personality and energy will be missed so incredibly much,” she wrote.

“Matt you have always been a wonderful man loving and caring supporting your wife and kids. It’s unfair how much tragedy and pain one family can endure. The grief is so encompassing as I think of your wonderful kids. The sadness of your loss is immense.”

Margaret Andreason wrote “the world has lost two really lovely and beautiful people and its so unfair.”

Kate Scouller added “They were such beautiful and kind souls, always with a smile on their faces”.

A message was posted to Mr Mulhall’s Facebook page on Saturday: “It is with heavy hearts that we let everyone know that Matt Mulhall and his beautiful partner in life Kathryn passed away on Wednesday the 8th of February 2023.

“Their children are being looked after by family and friends and some amazing support workers and other people involved in their lives.”
