Doing a burnout is not the best way to impress your mates in a flash car.
It’s even worse when you’re suspended from driving, let alone captured on CCTV from a pub covered from all angles by security cameras.
But that is exactly what one Lake Macquarie man did when he smoked up the tyres of his white Mercedes Benz AMG Coupe in front of his friends and in full view of recording cameras.
Blake Waterhouse, of Warners Bay, faced Wyong Local Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to one count of “prolonged loss of traction” and driving while suspended about 11pm on September 5, 2022.
Magistrate Robert Munro asked the 28-year-old’s lawyer Monica Bortolotti why the matter was so “old?”.
Ms Bortolotti said Waterhouse was not charged by police until March last year when he initially pleaded not guilty and the matter was given a hearing date.
She said Waterhouse ended up pleading guilty on the day of the hearing and it was adjourned to Monday for sentence.
However she told the court Waterhouse had since been charged with other, unrelated matters which were listed on February 12 in the Downing Centre Local Court, Sydney.
According to court documents these charges include assaulting a police officer in execution of their duty, hindering police and possessing a prohibited drug.
He has not entered any pleas in relation to these allegations.
Ms Bortolotti successfully sought for all of Waterhouse’s matters to join up and be listed in Sydney next month.
An agreed set of facts in the driving matters states Waterhouse was captured on CCTV behind the wheel of a white Mercedes Benz as it pulled into the car park of The Entrance Hotel about 6.10pm.
Waterhouse and another man got out of the vehicle and walked towards a nearby restaurant.
About 11pm Waterhouse and a number of other men were captured on CCTV leaving the gaming area of the hotel.
“The accused is observed on CCTV to be in close company with other males, continually shaking hands with one another and hugging,” the facts state.
“The accused enters the same white Mercedes Benz via the driver’s door and starts the engine.
“After a short time, the accused reverses the vehicle out of the car space and holds his foot on the brake pedal. This can be observed as the red in colour brake lights remain illuminated throughout the entire incident. The accused is observed to accelerate harshly, while keeping the brake pedal depressed. This has caused the rear driving wheels of the vehicle to lose traction with the sealed bitumen road surface for a period of about 11 seconds.”
The facts state the entire incident was captured on the pub’s CCTV.
Checks revealed Waterhouse’s Provisional licence was suspended at the time because of demerit points.
