Owners of The Box on the Water, Monique Keogh and Natasha Nicholson, have been running this restaurant for five years, and love being a popular part of the foreshore.
The building was constructed as part of the Ettalong foreshore redevelopment and when it went out for tender, the ladies teamed up.
“I had a cafe in Ettalong called Coast and Natasha was a customer of mine,” Mrs Keogh said.
“When the tender came up she said, ‘you should go for it’. I told her I’d do it if she came with me.”
The restaurant has cemented itself along the foreshore, serving modern Australian food which steers towards seafood.
“Everything is as local as possible; we have really consistent suppliers,” Mrs Keogh said.
“It’s really about uncomplicated food featuring the good produce.”
The restaurant has been hosting Master Series dining events since October 2018 featuring some of Australia’s most acclaimed celebrity chefs including Martin Boetz, Sean Connolly, Stefano Manfredi and Christine Manfield.
“The idea behind the events was to lift our profile along with promoting food on the peninsula,” Mrs Keogh said. “This area is becoming well known for great food.”
Head chef Anders Knoff treated us to the seafood tasting plate, featuring salmon, oysters, prawns and a divine salmon rillette.
This was followed by the melt in your mouth Grassfed Angus scotch fillet, with pommes anna: a classic French dish of sliced, layered potatoes, green beans, red onion, bacon and a veal reduction.
After each of the Master Series events, one meal from the event is chosen to be placed onto the menu at The Box on the Water.
We sampled one of Master Series chef Sean Connolly’s creations - the Raspberry Eaton Mess — light and fluffy meringue with the most decadently delicious raspberry compote and ice cream. Divine!
