WHEN everything is made from scratch, you know you’re in for a treat.
The team at Bateau Beach Cafe pride themselves on fresh ingredients and big flavours, and have been luring in the crowds since opening in December.
Owners Eve Salakas and Kirk Donkin are a great team, always having a laugh, with plenty of expertise and passion for their business.
“Kirk called me one day and said ‘let’s look at Pordella’, which was the restaurant here before us,” she said. “So we came down and here we are.
“I have worked in the industry for 15 years and Kirk is a chef and has worked in so many restaurants on the coast.
“We’re all about quality local produce here. The idea was to serve fresh and healthy food. Everything is made from scratch.”
It’s a family affair in the kitchen with Mr Donkin’s son Kane the head chef. Kane, who previously worked for Bells at Killcare, moved from Bali to be head chef and write the menu at Bateau Beach Cafe. He is joined in the kitchen by brothers Indy and Jye, along with mate Ryan Bhatt.
A major point of difference at the cafe is the elimination of single use plastic juice bottles. The freshest, healthiest ingredients go in to the kitchen and what goes out is just amazing.
From the breakfast menu, the ricotta hot cakes are to die for; smooth ricotta lemon hot cakes with honeycomb ginger butter and maple syrup, along with trail mix, fresh berries and mint leaves.
One of the popular lunch meals is the salmon poke bowl — a taste explosion with salmon ceviche to kimchi, pickled ginger and seaweed salad. There’s a surprise with every bite, with hidden ponzu, quinoa, brown rice avocado and wasabi mayo.
The menu includes burgers, tacos, wraps, as well as smoothie bowls, smoothies and fresh juices.
“We’ve had great feedback from locals, they love it,” Ms Salakas said.
“They needed another cafe around here. It’s such a big scene on the coast and there’s not a lot in between Long Jetty and Terrigal.
