LOCAL lawn bowls enthusiasts will be able to catch some of the state’s best bowlers in action from Saturday, with the eight-day NSW Championships to be held at Ettalong Bowling Club for a fourth straight year.
A host of Central Coast representatives will be vying for state titles, with Commonwealth Games medallist Aron Sherriff a big hope of taking out the blue ribbon state singles.
Ettalong will be strongly represented with their triples champion team in action from Monday, Lee Trethowan and Sherriff will also be looking to secure a third straight major pairs state title, while club bowls co-ordinator John Roberts will contest the senior singles.
“It’s a big event, people come from everywhere and they are all champion bowlers as they have all won their own zone titles to get this far,” Roberts said.
“Come along and watch some of the top local bowlers in action through the whole week.”
Halekulani’s Mitch McDonnell, Chris Willingham, Pat Reynolds and Michael Stead will compete in the state fours, while Barry Pike and Tom Townsend from Mingara will participate in the President’s Reserve Pairs.
Other Central Coast bowlers in action include Bateau Bay’s Warren Power and Terrigal duo Peter McCarten and Tony Shoebridge.
Sherriff, who has made 293 international appearances, hopes to see plenty of locals turn out for the biggest annual event on the state bowling calendar.
“It’s a major event, so hopefully the bowls lovers get out there and come and check it out,” he said.
“I’m sure there will be plenty of great games and hopefully we can get a good crowd to support all of the Central Coast guys involved.
“For us to host the state championships for a fourth year is massive for the club ... It should be a pretty special week.”
The NSW Championships will run until October 28, with games to commence from 9.00am each day.
