A young P-plater was allegedly high on a cocktail of cocaine and alcohol when he took a corner “too quick” and ploughed into a power pole, killing one mate and badly injuring at least one other, a court has heard.

Lleyton Van Spronssen, 18, of Ourimbah, faced Gosford Local Court via video link on Monday after he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm and being a P1 driver aged under 25 driving at night with more than one passenger aged under 21.

Charge sheets tendered in court allege Mr Van Spronssen was driving along Washington Ave at Niagara Park when he lost control about 4.20am on Saturday.

The charge sheets state a boy, 17 — who can not be named for legal reasons — died as a result of the collision while another boy, who cannot be named, suffered grievous bodily harm.

Mr Van Spronssen was not required to enter a plea as his solicitor Damien Conn applied for bail.

He told the court his client had no criminal history and would accept any conditions imposed by the court including that he not occupy the driver’s seat of any vehicle and abide by a curfew.

Magistrate Peter Barnett said from the police documents Mr Van Spronssen “seems to make admissions” to police that he had been drinking alcohol prior to the collision and “taking a recreational drug”.

Police allege in court documents tendered as part of the bail application, identified the drug cocaine.

Mr Barnett said Mr Van Spronssen also told police he was “driving too quick for the corner”.

However Mr Barnett granted Mr Van Spronssen bail because his biggest concern of him failing to appear at future court dates could be mitigated by strict conditions.

Investigations are continuing.

Mr Van Spronssen was adjourned to face court again on May 22.
