Even for people who didn’t know him, the disappearance of Logan Losurdo has captivated and grieved an entire community.
The popular 20-year-old kitchen hand and university student was the foster kid, who despite his difficult beginnings, went on to become a determined student and vice-captain of Tuggerah Lakes Secondary Campus, Tumbi Umbi.
Mr Losurdo documented his story so eloquently in a speech, which drew a standing ovation, after winning the AVID Australia Student Speaker competition in 2017.
But besides a black Billabong jacket, white Reebok shoes and his wallet found near where he was last seen in the early hours of November 26, 2021, there has been no trace of him ever since.
Police have all but ruled out a possible drug debt as a reason for his disappearance.
Instead it is understood investigators are leaning towards misadventure as a possible cause.
Emergency services including the SES and Volunteer Rescue Association conducted a large-scale air, land and sea search for Mr Losurdo when he was reported missing after failing to turn up for work at an Erina cafe.
Friends and community volunteers conducted their own searches co-ordinated every morning from out the front of North Entrance Surf life Saving Club.
A drone operator conducted aerial patrols of sand dunes and bushland around Magenta and broadcast messages of support from his friends in the days following his disappearance.
Mr Losurdo was last seen about 1.15am walking along Pebble Beach Ave towards Wilfred Barrett Drive at Magenta, after a night with friends.
Police later released CCTV images of a white car and a mystery man who was seen getting out of the vehicle and speaking with Mr Losurdo shortly before his disappearance.
Detectives attached to Strike Force McConnell, established to investigate Mr Losurdo’s whereabouts, have since identified the occupants of the white vehicle — and after speaking to them — have ruled out any connection with his disappearance.
As “missing” posters put up around the area begin to fade, a Facebook group “Looking for Logan” is all that remains in the hunt for closure around the promising young man’s fate.
It urges people to “keep sharing, posting, talking and remembering Logan” given the “most dangerous thing in this world to lose is hope”.
Several people commented that they only joined the page to find out what happened to Mr Losurdo.
“I didn’t know Logan But I check every day to see if he has been found,” one woman wrote.
“I hope he comes home safe soon.”
Tuggerah Lakes Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Glenn Trayhurn said police were refusing to give up on the investigation.
“Inquiries are continuing by officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District under Strike Force McConnell,” he said.
“Logan is described as being of Caucasian appearance, between 170cm to 180cm tall, of medium build, with black, curly hair and brown eyes.”
