A MAN and a woman have been charged with a string of offences after allegedly stealing a handbag from an aged care nurse who devoted her life to helping others as as she lay dying after an horrific accident at North Gosford.
Police allege the pair then went on a shopping spree with the victim’s credit cards.
Kay Maria Shaylor, 62, of Umina Beach, was driving to work at Chamberlain Gardens nursing home about 6am on Saturday, September 3, when a Holden Commodore collided with her Mitsubishi Mirage on Mann St near Dwyer St.
AGED CARE NURSE HAD 'NO HATE IN HER BONES'
Brisbane Water LAC Commander Daniel Sullivan said if proven, it would be one of the “lowest” acts he had ever seen.
Supt Sullivan revealed a strike force had been launched after police were alerted to a number of transactions on Ms Shaylor’s bank accounts after her death.
“I have nothing but praise for detectives who swiftly brought this pair to the courts,” Supt Sullivan.
“Should these circumstances be proven, it would be one of the lowest acts I’ve seen.”
Ms Shaylor suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to Gosford Hospital before being flown to Royal North Shore Hospital where she later died.
It is alleged that Ms Shaylor’s handbag was removed from the crash scene during the emergency response and taken to a nearby residence where credit cards and cash were removed.
The handbag was then returned to the crash site.
It is further alleged that the credit cards were used to buy food, cigarettes, alcohol and even a fishing rod from local businesses.
Ms Shaylor’s family members cancelled the cards when the frauds were discovered.
On Wednesday police arrested a 42-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman at Gosford Railway Station.
They were taken to Gosford Police Station where the man was charged with 15 offences including 10 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, assault, intimidation and three outstanding warrants. He was refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court today.
The woman was charged with five counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and larceny. She was granted conditional bail to appear at Gosford Local Court on Tuesday, September 27.
Ms Shaylor’s friends say the aged care nurse had “no hate bones in her”.
Having grown up in Liverpool, in Sydney’s south west, Ms Shaylor lived on the Central Coast “on and off since she was 17” and owned a new age shop with her sister until several foreign aid trips to Cambodia and a four-month stint in Peru — where she volunteered at an orphanage for disabled children — saw her become an aged care nurse.
“She never married,” close friend Debra Starkey said. “That’s why she gave herself; she always said, ‘I was not meant to have children, I was here to help’.”
Bianca Harrington, 20, has been charged with dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death and driving while suspended over the crash.
Police allege the suspended L-plater made admissions to smoking five bongs before borrowing her father’s Holden Commodore and driving from Sydney to the Central Coast in the lead up to the accident.
Ms Harrington was refused bail when she appeared in court and the matter was adjourned to October 28.
