McLachlan Ave is becoming the townhouse capital of Long Jetty with another knock-down-rebuild application lodged for more townhouses.
The applicant, Mr M Cassidy, has lodged a development application (DA) to knock down an old fibro cottage and detached garage at number 26 McLachlan Ave and build four townhouses on the 992sq m site.
According to the DA each two-storey townhouse would contain three bedrooms with open plan living, kitchen and dining off a ground floor courtyard.
“All units will be constructed a combination of face brickwork and lightweight wall cladding with ‘Colorbond’ roof sheeting and aluminium framed windows and external doors,” the DA states.
“The proposed development complements the existing medium density housing stock in providing a variety of choice, that being low rise townhouses. The site is close to transport and the local retail precinct providing housing choice that encourages low vehicle use.”
The DA states the relatively flat site is fully serviced by water, sewer and power and the design would use “traditional building methods with external materials” to reflect and compliment the existing character of the area being a mixture of old fibro clad cottages and new builds.
“The building is horizontally and vertically articulated through the provision of overhanging floors and roof forms which provides interest and creates shadowing, which in turn reduce the apparent bulk and scale,” the DA states.
Each townhouse would have ground floor courtyards at least 45sq m in size with the fourth townhouse having a sizeable 80sq m courtyard.
“The proposal is an example of good design that will contribute positively to the streetscape,” the DA states.
“Landscape treatment and fence design provides both form and function, further enhancing the local character as viewed from both public spaces and adjoining properties, while providing security and privacy for the residents. Traditional materials and construction methods configured in a modern architectural theme provide a sustainable and stylish addition to the local housing mix.”
McLachlan Ave is fast becoming the townhouse capital of Long Jetty with a swath of multi-unit developments already built in the street and plans approved for several more including a controversial eight-room boarding house at the old corner store site at the intersection of Lindsay St given the green light in 2020.
