Dressed in a red Tommy Hilfiger tracksuit, a 19-year-old man faced Gosford Local Court for the first time on Thursday after allegedly leading police on three wild chases in his Toyota HiLux before crashing at Somersby.
Keith Rex McKenzie, of Woy Woy, appeared in the dock while his Legal Aid solicitor applied for bail, telling the court he was just 19 and had no prior criminal record.
However the police prosecutor opposed bail, telling the court Mr McKenzie posed a danger to the community.
“From the facts this is a protracted criminal conduct,” he said.
“Not only did he pose an extraordinary high risk to himself as the defendant and police but more so to the general public.”
Magistrate Alan Railton said “the facts sheets makes for some very disturbing reading” and that Mr McKenzie was alleged to have run red lights and crossed onto the wrong side of the road at high speed.
“Thankfully there was no one injured,” Mr Railton said before refusing Mr McKenzie’s bail application.
Mr McKenzie was charged with failing to stop during a police pursuit, three counts of driving dangerously, resisting an officer in execution of duty and exceeding the speed by more than 45km/h.
