The long-awaited $172m private hospital planned in Gosford has finally been approved.

AA Crown Holdings has been granted planning approval by the State Government to build Northside Private Hospital with 238 beds at the old Ausgrid site on Racecourse Rd.

The hospital will be 11 storeys high and include state-of-the-art facilities including radiology, pathology, intensive care and operating theatres.

Marcello Ramirez, representing AA Crown Holdings, said construction was expected to start in mid 2022 with the hospital to be completed by 2025.

“We are very excited to have received DA approval,” he said.

“We have ended up with a result that I think Gosford is going to be really proud of; a new health precinct and new health infrastructure coming into the city.

“We will be looking at 238 beds and more than 300 carparks. It will be a two stage process, with stage one being the hospital and car spaces.”

Stage two, which will bring the entire investment to $350m, will include a second development application for construction of a five-story building for retail and medical support services, located adjacent to the hospital.

Mr Ramirez said the company was working in partnership with Northside Group and the next step was appointing an operator for the hospital.

“We are currently in discussions with various operators … but we hope to be announcing something in the coming months,” he said. “Since the DA was approved the interest from operators has been coming in and there are a number of large operators interested.”

He said they chose the build on the coast due to its immense growth potential.

Central Coast Parliamentary Secretary Adam Crouch said the project was exciting for the region.

“We are going to see around 2200 jobs being created in construction while this project takes place and on completion more than 460 full time staff working right here on this old Ausgrid site,” he said.

“We are seeing a revitalisation of a health precinct right here on the Central Coast.”

Mr Crouch said it was vital for the region to have facilities like this given the population growth of 95,250 residents expected by 2041.

He said the project hit a hurdle in 2018 when Central Coast councillors voted to refuse all state significant developments in Gosford.

The decision resulted in an extended approval process through the Independent Planning Commission (IPC), however the NSW Planning Department had worked closely with the applicant to see the project approved.

“In spite of the former councillors attempting to stymie this project’s progress, I am delighted that planning approval has been confirmed, paving the way for construction to begin by mid-2022,” Mr Crouch said.
