A 29-year-old has been jailed after ramming a police vehicle in a stolen car before fleeing the scene at Springfield last year.
Jack Ray Courtney, of Barrack Heights, was sentenced to five years and three months jail with a non-parole period of three years and five months after pleading guilty to stealing a car, driving while disqualified and using an offensive weapon to avoid arrest.
The court heard Courtney was seen by two general duties officers driving along the Central Coast Highway about 9.35pm on May 24 last year in a silver Nissan Elgrand, which had been stolen from the Lake Haven Shopping Centre car park on December 1, 2019.
An agreed set of facts states police observed him cut a corner into Aston Rd without slowing and then turned into Barralong Rd.
Police activated their lights, with Courtney initially slowing down and then accelerating away.
The officers, in a fully marked police car with the call sign BW38, followed the offender into Wells St before he turned into Sherwood Drive where he stopped in the middle of the road.
“The offender has then reversed the Nissan Elgrand into the front of BW38, causing damage to the bonnet,” the facts state.
He then drove about 50m down Sherwood Drive before he stopped again.
After about 15 seconds later the officers saw the reverse lights come on and the car reversed back into the police car.
“This collision caused further damage to BW38 and caused the registration plate of the offender’s vehicle to dislodge,” the facts state.
“The offender drove away towards the intersection of Sherwood Drive and Marana Rd, followed by BW38, before stopping once again. SC Maynard stopped BW38 approximately 10m behind the offender’s vehicle, and as soon as BW38 came to a stop the offender reversed his vehicle into the front of BW38, causing further damage.”
Courtney then drove into Marana Rd where he did a U-turn and started driving towards the police car.
The officers tried to reverse out of the way “however the front off-side wheel of the offender’s vehicle collided with the front end of BW38, causing airbags to deploy and immobilising the vehicle”.
The car was found abandoned in a nearby street and the Dog Squad was called in but the scent was lost in Balfour Close.
A resident told police he heard someone run down the side of his property and the following day found a pair of Tommy Hilfiger red, white and blue slides, which police were able to link to the offender through DNA.
He was arrested five days later at Barrack Heights.
With time already served he will be eligible for parole on May 21, 2024.
