A large police presence, including the controversial use of sniffer dogs, failed to deter some revellers from allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the Lost Paradise festival at the weekend.

A 28-year-old man will face Gosford Local Court next week after being charged with the alleged “deemed supply” of drugs after he was allegedly caught trying to enter the festival at Glenworth Valley with 55 MDMA pills.

He was arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station where he was charged and later released on conditional bail.

A further 18 court attendance notices were issued to people charged with possessing drugs while police exercised their discretion and issued another 12 on-the-spot fines to people for possessing small amounts of drugs.

Ten people were given “cautions” for possessing cannabis during the four-day event.

It was the first time in four years the festival had returned to the Central Coast after Covid, bushfires and the death of 22-year-old Brisbane man Joshua Tam in 2018.

Brisbane Water Police led the high-visibility operation targeting alcohol and drug-related crime, as well as anti-social behaviour among the sellout 15,000-strong crowd.

The charges were down on the previous festival in 2018 were more than 50 people were hauled before the courts when police found drugs secreted inside roll-on deodorants, jars of vegemite and even the stuffing of a roast chicken.

It was also down on the 97 people detected and charged over possession of illicit drugs, including MDMA, amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, ketamine and psilocybin (mushrooms) at the Fuzzy Field Day 2023 festival in The Domain, Sydney, on New Year’s Day.
