Central Coast Covid: Eight new cases brings region’s total to 108

The Central Coast has recorded a further eight cases after reaching a record 100 at the weekend. It comes as Killarney Vale Public School is reopened and calls for teachers to get Pfizer jabs locally.

The Central Coast has recorded a further eight cases to 8pm last night, bringing the total to 108 since the current outbreak began.

The new cases were among the 1281 recorded across NSW from 136,455 tests with five deaths.

Central Coast Local Health District said seven were linked to known cases. The source of infection for one case is under investigation.

Six cases were in the community while infectious.

It comes as one new exposure site has been identified with anyone who attended BWS at Lake Haven on Friday, September 3 from 5.20pm to 5.30pm considered a casual contact.

A casual contact must self isolate until they get a negative result.

CCLHD has also updated the exposure time of a previously identified exposure site at Bunnings, West Gosford, on Wednesday, September 1 from 10.45am to 11.15am.

NSW chief medical officer Dr Kerry Chant “called out” the Central Coast area during the daily government Covid update.

She said case numbers outside the 12 local government areas of concern were also growing.

“So everyone needs to get tested if they have the most minimal symptoms,” she said.

It comes as Killarney Vale Public School has been reopened this morning after being closed for deep cleaning over the weekend.

A member of the school community tested positive last week with 65 students, teachers and staff on site at the time.

Terrigal State Liberal MP Adam Crouch said a number of people were identified as close contacts and had been directed to self-isolate for 14 days.

“While the school grounds have been made safe and clean, NSW Health is reminding families that children should stay home unless they absolutely need to attend school, such as if they are the child of an essential worker,” Mr Crouch said.

“People who live, work and study in the suburbs of Bateau Bay, Blue Bay, Killarney Vale, Long Jetty, Shelly Beach, The Entrance, The Entrance North and Toowoon Bay also need to be extra vigilant because there is mounting evidence of community transmission in this area.”

Meanwhile Gosford State Labor MP Liesl Tesch is calling on the government to provide priority Pfizer vaccinations for teachers and early childcare staff on the coast from today.

She said under the government’s return to school rollout staff have to be vaccinated by November 8.

However with limited Pfizer vaccinations on the coast she said staff were being forced to travel through Covid hotspots to Qudos Bank Arena to get a priority jab.

“We all want face-to-face learning to resume in a safe environment for our students, staff and teachers, but it is ridiculous for the Berejiklian Government to mandate this without ensuring that teaching staff on the Central Coast are actually able to get vaccinated here on the Coast,” Ms Tesch said.

“Coasties are being forced to take the time to travel to-and-from Homebush just to get the priority vaccines that they need. Asking school and early childcare staff to travel through red zones and risk both their health as well as police questioning is just reprehensible.”

“With the staggered return of students beginning from the 25th October, I am very worried that many teachers won’t be fully vaccinated in time and unable to return to the classroom.”

PREVIOUSLY FROM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

The Central Coast has hit 100 cases of Covid since the latest outbreak.

It comes as seven new cases were recorded across the region as part of NSW’s total of 1485 to 8pm last night.

It has been a worrying week for the coast with the region recording high numbers which peaked at 15 on Saturday.

Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) said that five of the seven new cases “are linked to known cases”.

“The source of infection for the other two cases is under investigation. Five cases were in the community while infectious,” a CCLHD spokeswoman said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the state had reached 40 per cent of people fully vaccinated, with 73 per cent having received their first dose.

Ms Berejiklian said the State Government would be discussing what happens in regional areas this week in terms of ending or extending the lockdown.

It comes as Wyong Hospital Emergency Department has become a “close contact” exposure site after a person visited the hospital while infectious with Covid.

Anyone who attended the Emergency Department’s waiting room on September 2 from 8.45pm to 11.59pm must get tested and isolate for 14 days regardless of a result.

“All necessary risk assessments and protocols for a health care facility exposure were carried out including deep cleaning of the area,” a Central Coast Local Health District spokeswoman said.

“A small number of staff who were exposed have been tested and are isolating in line with exposure protocols. The community is advised that the exposure is confined to the waiting room area, not the wider Emergency Department or hospital.

“Anyone who was in the waiting room area outside the times listed above or was in other parts of the Emergency Department at those times does not need to test or isolate but should remain vigilant for symptoms and get tested if any appear, no matter how mild.”

Wyong Hospital remains open.

CCLHD has announced new exposure sites.

“A number of Central Coast locations have been identified as exposure sites. Anyone who attended these venues on the dates and times listed is a casual contact. Casual contacts must immediately get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result, even if they have had a test in recent days.”
