Central Coast coronavirus: stadium loses NRL game while A-League game will be closed to fans

If you were looking to go to Central Coast Stadium to catch A-League or NRL action this weekend, you will have to watch it on TV instead.

The sporting feast that was set to take place at Central Coast Stadium this weekend will go behind closed doors.

The National Rugby League announced on Friday that its round two matches, including the Sydney Roosters’ game against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on Saturday, would be played behind closed doors.

It was announced on Monday afternoon that the game will now played at Leichhardt Oval instead of Central Coast Stadium. It will still be closed to public and will be played behind closed doors, with the move made to assist with player movement and broadcast operations.

Football Federation Australia made their announcement on Monday morning, ahead of the Central Coast Mariners’ scheduled home match against Melbourne City FC on Friday night.

“Football Federation Australia (FFA) today confirmed that the remainder of the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 regular season, and the Westfield W-League 2020 Grand Final scheduled for this weekend will go ahead, but with all matches to be played behind closed doors and with no fans permitted to attend,” the statement read.

FFA also confirmed that grassroots football will continue to be played “in line with Government advice”.

The Roosters released a club statement on Saturday acknowledging the disappointment of fans.

“We value your constant support and understanding,” it read.

“The safety and health of our players, staff, members and supporters will always be at the forefront of any decision the club makes.”

Based on the advice of health officials, the Roosters have also advised players to avoid handshakes, autographs and selfies to limit the risk of infection. The club has also postponed club events and community appearances until further notice.
