A man who was allegedly driving a stolen Land Rover Discovery has been charged with manslaughter following a head-on crash, which killed 45-year-old Darren Hill earlier this year.
A man who was allegedly driving a stolen Land Rover Discovery has been charged with manslaughter following a head-on crash, which killed 45-year-old Darren Hill earlier this year.
Sam Conway, 27, of Killarney Vale, appeared at Wyong Local Court today via video link after he was charged with crossing over to the wrong side of Wyong Rd at Berkeley Vale and ploughing into Mr Hill’s Kia Rio about 4.40am on January 15.
Mr Hill, a devoted father and young grandfather, was driving home from his job as a security guard at the time.
Police allege Conway fled the scene.
Crash Investigation Unit officers commenced inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Following extensive inquiries, officers attended Silverwater Correctional Complex today and arrested Conway, who was in custody for unrelated matters.
He was charged with manslaughter, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death travelling more than 45km/h over the limit, dangerous driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist, negligent driving occasioning death and disqualified driving.
He was also charged with stealing the Discovery from a Terrigal property the day before the crash, not keeping left of the median strip and driving in a bus lane.
Conway was refused bail to appear again in court on Tuesday, 6 August.
