A man in custody for unrelated matters is a “person of interest” in the investigation into a stolen 4WD, which killed 45-year-old security officer Darren Hill.
Emergency services were called to Wyong Rd at Berkeley Vale about 4.40am on January 15 following reports of a two-vehicle crash.
On arrival police were told the shirtless driver of a stolen Land Rover Discovery and another occupant had fled the scene on foot.
Paramedics tried to save Mr Hill but the young grandfather died at the scene.
The security officer was on his way home when it is alleged the stolen Land Rover crossed to the wrong side of the road and ploughed head on with his Kia Rio.
The next day, after a widespread manhunt, police arrested a man at Killarney Vale, wanted in relation to the white Land Rover, which had been stolen from a property on Sundale Ave, Terrigal, the night before the crash.
He was charged with outstanding matters but has not charged with anything to do the with stolen 4WD or the fatal crash.
A week later on January 20 police were called to The Ridgeway following reports of a single vehicle accident.
The driver and sole occupant allegedly gave police false details and he was taken to Gosford Police Station where his identity was established to be 26-year-old Sam Conway, who was wanted in relation to an outstanding warrant for unrelated matters.
The Express Advocate can reveal Mr Conway is the “person of interest” who police believe was driving the stolen Land Rover when it killed Mr Hill.
A police spokesman said it was an “ongoing investigation” but it is understood detectives are awaiting the results of forensic and other tests to link Mr Conway with the stolen Land Rover.
Police have also appealed for anyone with dashcam of the white Land Rover prior to the crash.
Mr Conway has not yet been charged in relation to the stolen vehicle or the fatal crash.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or Wyong Police Station.
