It started with a fake Instagram account, then an organised sexual rendevous and ended with the stabbing of a 16-year-old.
The events leading up to the teen stabbing in Kincumber on April 26 can now be revealed after Andre Simon Mears pleaded guilty.
Mears, of North Gosford, appeared at Gosford Local Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to one charge of reckless wounding before Magistrate Alan Railton.
Mears, 19, wore a suit and was accompanied by family as his plea was entered.
Facts tendered to the court state that the victim, aged 16, created a fake Instagram account pretending to be female on April 25. He started to message Mears whose Instagram account has a profile picture of him without a shirt and showing a tattoo of an animal paw on his arm.
They exchanged messages which lead to Mears and the “female” organising to meet up for a “sexual encounter” at Frost Reserve in Kincumber on April 26 at 1pm.
The facts state that on April 26, Mears caught a bus to Kincumber and went to the rendezvous point at the oval behind the cricket nets.
He saw the victim and another male, aged 17, nearby sitting on a log.
Mears waited some time and when a woman failed to show he tried to call her before leaving and ended up sitting against a fence at the intersection of Benelong Cl and Warren Rd.
The facts went on to say the victim and the other male approached Mears and said “have you seen my girlfriend, she has black hair?”.
Mears replied “no” before the victim walked up to him and said “actually there’s one more thing” and kicked Mears in the side of the head saying “you perverted f**k”.
“The accused was stunned by the kick and the victim kicked the accused in the face again,” the facts read.
“The accused reached into the pocket of his jeans and grabbed a knife that he carries on himself and with his left hand has thrust the knife in the direction of the victim, striking the victim in the upper thigh.”
When Mears felt the knife hit something, he ran to a nearby bus stop and waited 12 minutes for the bus to take him home.
The victim was taken to Royal North Shore where he underwent surgery and has since been released.
The witness and victim made statements to the police confirming the fake Instagram account and identified Mears from his Instagram profile.
On May 5, police arrested Mears at a home in Narara where he had been staying.
Mears co-operated and took police to his North Gosford unit, showing them where the clothes he was wearing during the incident were.
The facts stated that in his first interview with police, he made full admissions and said he wounded the victim out of “self defence”. He said he carried a hunting knife for safety as he walks to and from work in North Gosford.
Mears said he went to Frost Reserve as he believed he was meeting a woman for a “sexual encounter”.
He also took police to where he dumped the knife in West Gosford after panicking a few days after the incident.
Mears will be sentenced on July 22.
