The pre-hearing trial for the man accused of murdering 29-year-old Indigenous man Jordan “Ducky” Powell has been adjourned until later this month.
Greenleigh, NSW man Kenan Dowden-Carlisle, 19, appeared at the ACT Magistrates Court via phone on Friday.
Mr Dowden-Carlisle previously pleaded not guilty to the single charge of murder in January.
His lawyer sought a two-week adjournment which was granted by Magistrate Glenn Theakston.
“Am I needed any more,” Mr Dowden-Carlisle asked the magistrate after the adjournment was granted.
Police allege Mr Dowden-Carlisle murdered Mr Powell during a brawl at Garema Pl, Civic, on December 4 last year.
The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on a Saturday morning, shocked the Canberra community.
Following his death, family members and friends of Mr Powell created a makeshift shrine for the slain man in the alleyway where he was found.
Almost five months after his death messages of support for Mr Powell can still be seen on the wall, including “Wiradjuri warrior”, “missing you so much unc” and “ RIP Ducky Coe Powell we love you our brother, you will be forever missed (and) always in our hearts 4eva.”
Mr Dowden-Carlisle will appear again at the ACT Magistrates Court on April 14.
