Kenan Dowden-Carlisle faces ACT Magistrates Court over alleged Civic murder

A teenager has fronted court charged with murder after a man died during an altercation in broad daylight in the middle of Civic.

A man has faced court charged with murder after a man died following an altercation in civic on Saturday morning.

Greenleigh NSW man Kenan Dowden-Carlisle, 19, appeared via phone at the ACT Magistrates court on Monday morning charged with one count of murder.

Mr Dowden-Carlisle did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused by Magistrate James Stewart.

The court heard Mr Dowden-Carlisle was in Covid-19 isolation at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

When asked how he was doing by Magistrate Stewart Mr Dowden-Carlisle said “not great”.

The defendant did not enter pleas.

Mr Dowden-Carlisle will appear at the ACT Magistrates Court again for a forensic procedure on Monday and will appear again for a mention on December 17.

Mr Dowden-Carlisle is accused of murdering 29-year-old Indigenous man Jordan Powell in Civic on Saturday morning.

ACT Policing were called to Garema Place at 9.45am where Powell died at the scene.

Dowden-Carlisle was arrested by ACT Policing officers at 10.30am at Ainslie Place, following a short foot pursuit he was located at City Walk.

ACT Policing urges anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website quoting reference number 6978051.

Tributes have flooded the alleyway off Garema St where Jordan “Ducky” Powell was found dead.

A makeshift shrine has been erected with flowers, balloons, feathers, cards and coloured tealights illustrating the Aboriginal flag.

Messages have been written on the walls to honour Powell such as “Wiradjuri warrior”, “RIP brother boy Jordan, love you”, “Missing you so much unc”, and “ RIP Ducky Coe Powell we love you our brother, you will be forever missed (and) always in our hearts 4eva”.
