Bruce Lehrmann: defence applies for permanent stay in Higgins rape trial

Defence lawyers have applied to permanently block the high-profile rape trial of the man accused of raping Brittany Higgins.

Australia's Court System

Lawyers for former Liberal Staffer Bruce Lehrmann have applied for a permanent stay on his upcoming rape trial.

If successful, the application would permanently prevent the case against Mr Lehrmann from being heard in court.

In concluding Friday’s hearing ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum reserved her decision, and said she would hand down her judgement next week.

A non-publication order on the evidence submitted in Friday’s hearing is in place until Justice McCallum makes her decision on the application.

Mr Lehrmann has pleaded not guilty to a single charge of sexual intercourse without consent.

Police allege Mr Lehrmann raped Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in the office of Linda Reynolds on March 23, 2019.

A six week trial into the case is set to begin in June.
