A new dad having a night out for the first time since the birth of his son was nabbed with cocaine.
Charlie Fursdon, 24, was caught cutting cocaine on his phone during a night out last year.
Police found two clip seal bags of cocaine on Fursdon when he was arrested.
On Wednesday, Fursdon appeared at the ACT Magistrates court for sentencing after pleading guilty to drug possession.
Fursdon represented himself and told the court he and his friends had a few too many drinks during the night.
“We all thought it was a good idea to get coke,” he said.
“Unfortunately I was the one holding it.”
He said he lived with his son and girlfriend and worked as a tiler.
“(I’ve had) a lot of problems in the past,” he said.
“I'd like to say I’m in a good place (compared) to where I was before.”
Fursdon said t he had cut out alcohol and use of illicit substances since his arrest.
He said prior to his arrest he would only use illicit substances ‘sporadically’ after drinking.
Fursdon also told the court he had tried accessing counselling but struggled to attend due to work commitments.
Magistrate Ian Temby said he was “cautious” about Fursdon’s rehabilitation due to his previous driving and drug convictions.
However he described Fursdon as a young man who was “earnest” in his desire to turn his life around.
Mr Temby convicted Fursdon and fined him $600.
He also gave the young dad a 12 month good-behaviour-order with two months of supervision.
