The family of “larrikin” Canberra tradie Bobby Allan say they have been serving a “life sentence” ever since the father of four was attacked and left to die by three drug addicts in December 2017.
Mr Allan’s killers, Grame Jarrett Vickerstaff, 47, Dean Phillip Welsh, 49, and Colin Maxwell Booth, 35, were on Tuesday sentenced for killing Mr Allan at his Rivett home, in a crime Justice David Mossop described as a “violent assault upon an unsuspecting victim”.
All three had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Vickerstaff, the ringleader, was sentenced to nine years and three months jail, with a non-parole period of six years and six months, for his role in Mr Allan’s death.
Vickerstaff blinded Mr Allan by spraying automotive degreaser in his eyes before attacking him with an aluminium baseball bat.
Justice Mossop said Vickerstaff showed a “callous disregard for Mr Allan” in trying to mislead investigators and shift blame onto Booth and Welsh.
Vickerstaff’s violence was largely prompted by his belief that Mr Allan had been involved with his then-girlfriend.
He said Vickerstaff was now remorseful for killing Mr Allan, and said a serious assault he suffered in Canberra’s trouble-plagued prison, the Alexander Maconochie Centre, followed by more than a year in isolation for his own safety, did not justify a shorter stint in jail.
Welsh, who stood by the front door stopping Mr Allan from immediately fleeing Vickerstaff’s attack, was sentenced to four years jail and will be eligible for parole in early 2021.
Booth, who stood about two metres back from Vickerstaff and Welsh as Mr Allan yelled “f*cking what the hell”, and did nothing to stop the brutal attack, was sentenced to 33 months and 15 days jail, but is already serving time for unrelated offending, so will not be eligible for parole until April 2022.
Outside court, Mr Allan’s stepfather, Jock Allan reading a statement on behalf of the family, said: “No sentence that was handed out will bring Bobby back to us.
“We will never be able to forgive these evil monsters for the horrible and shameful acts they committed.”
Jock Allan said the pain of losing Bobby was “too much to bear at times” and was something no family should have to go through.
“They gave Bobby a death sentence and (the family) a life sentence,” he said.
