Robert Glen Sirl faces long jail sentence for rape and child sex offending

The victim of a brutal rape has confronted her victim in court, saying she “can’t express the hatred” she feels for her attacker.
Robert Glen Sirl, 48, also known as “Chappo” fronted the ACT Supreme Court twice on Monday for separate sentencing proceedings, one relating to the violent rape of a woman and the other relating to maintaining a sexual relationship with a vulnerable teenage girl.
In a moving victim impact statement, the woman told the Sirl: “I can’t express the hatred I feel for you”.
“I thought I knew what the word hate meant, now I know what it truly means.”
The woman, who cannot be named, said she would forever suffer from what Sirl did to her in August 2018.
“What Chappo did to me is something that I will never recover from,” she said.
“It is a day-to-day battle to beat this.”
Sirl raped the woman twice, including once with an unknown “sharp bladed object”, causing the woman to lose more than a litre of blood.
Sirl’s barrister, Katrina Musgrove, told Justice John Burns her client had used drugs since he was eight, but had kicked his habit behind bars, where he worked as a gardener.
“He fills his days by going to the gym and being prosocial,” Ms Musgrove said.
Sirl appeared separately before Justice David Mossop, who will separately sentence him for maintaining a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, who he traded ice for sex with.
The court heard Sirl would also be pleading guilty to maintaining a sexual relationship with a second teenager.
His sentencing proceedings continue.
