An ex-Brothers 4 Life Blacktown gang leader has been sentenced for stabbing a gangland triple murderer in Goulburn Supermax.

Farhad Qaumi, 39, appeared at Goulburn District Court on Wednesday for assault occasioning bodily harm of Abuzar Sultani – a charge he previously pleaded guilty to.

Qaumi is currently serving an almost 60-year jail term for a long list of crimes, including orchestrating the assassination of standover man and construction identity Jo Antoun who was shot dead at the front of his Strathfield home in December 2013.

Judge Mark Williams referenced the agreed facts, which state both men were housed in the same cell block in Goulburn Supermax, in adjoining cells, which allowed them to spend time together in certain areas in the prison.

Footage of the stabbing was played in court as an exhibit, which the court heard occurred on May 20, 2020, when Sultani and Qaumi were taken to the TV room in handcuffs.

The video showed Qaumi in the room with his handcuffs removed, and Sultani entering with his handcuffs still on.

As he moved to the door to have his handcuffs taken off, Qaumi who was standing behind, took a shiv made from a razor from his pant pocket and lunged for the victim, stabbing him multiple times.

Sultani, who was bleeding from his face and neck, tried to move around the room to protect himself.

He is observed in the footage to still be wearing handcuffs and therefore limited in being able to defend himself.

Then, Qaumi could be seen to pre-emptively kneel on the floor, ready to be handcuffed before a number of officers streamed in.

The crown prosecutor Nicole Johnson said Sultani sustained a 10cm laceration to his neck.

The court also heard he had a 5cm laceration on his forehead as well as other injuries.

Qaumi’s lawyer, David Price, mentioned that while only one weapon was seen in the video, two weapons were found at the scene – one with only the victim’s DNA on it.

Judge Williams believed there to be no evidence for a motive.

Ms Johnson argued that an additional sentence was required to seek specific deterrence.

“He needs to be deterred from committing further crimes to protect inmates,” Ms Johnson said.

While his lawyer, David Price, said “adding years will have a crushing effect on his parole opportunities.”

“This will reduce whatever privileges he gets at Supermax, such as association with inmates,” Mr Price said.

“This is basically an incident between two people, not an attack on an innocent victim, but two people who have obviously had issues with each-other.”

Judge Williams classified the offence as mid-range in terms of objective seriousness.

He believed there to be planning and premeditation involved and thought a concurrent sentence would reflect the offence.

“The court should protect the welfare of other inmates,” Judge Williams said.

Qaumi was given 19 months on top of his current sentence, with 12 months non parole. He is eligible for release from October 7, 2056.
