Abuzar Sultani stabbed inside jail by man who planned the murder of his mentor

They were the alpha dogs of their respective crime gangs and had a score to settle with each other. So how did Abuzar Sultani and Farhad Qaumi manage to get in the same room together?

The inner workings of convicted killer Abuzar Sultani

Abuzar Sultani was stabbed in the face while behind bars in Australia’s most secure prison by the gang leader who orchestrated the murder of his mentor.

With non publication orders removed following the sentencing of Sultani to three life terms, it can be revealed that he was on the wrong end of a shiv fight with former Brothers For Life gang leader Farhad Qaumi inside Goulburn’s Supermax prison. The fight left Sultani with a serious laceration and he still has scars.

Qaumi is serving an almost 60 year jail term for a long list of crimes, including orchestrating the assassination of standover man and construction identity Joe Antoun who was shot dead at the front door of his Strathfield home in December 2013.

Sultani was devastated by the murder. He viewed Antoun as a friend and mentor.

Police found newspaper clippings about Antoun’s murder when they raided Sultani’s home.

In sentencing Sultani to a triple life sentence on Friday, Justice Des Fagan found Sultani was motivated by revenge when he murdered Sydney underworld figure Pasquale Barbaro.

Barbaro was believed to have orchestrated Antoun’s murder by sending a hit man to the construction identity’s home where he was shot while opening his front door.

By May 2020, Sultani and Qaumi were both inmates inside Supermax. Both men were the alpha dogs of their respective crime syndicates.

On May 20, they were allowed to meet at 9.10am in a space called “the TV room” in Cell Block B1, court documents said.

Qaumi stepped forward to have his cuffs taken off by placing his hands through a gap in the locked cell door He then produced a shiv allegedly made from a razor and stabbed Sultani in the neck and face for two minutes, the documents said.

Qaumi then put the shiv on a table and knelt at the rear of the cell with his hands in the air.

It is understood two shivs were found in the room.

“It is understood that the motivation for the attack upon Sultani by (Qaumi) was the mistaken belief … that Sultani was going to speak to police and provide information in relation to unrelated matters involving (Qaumi) or others,” a police fact sheet tendered in the case said.

Qaumi’s high profile lawyer Simon Joyner said his client has pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Sultani told prison psychologist Dr Olav Nielssen in October there had been a peace agreement between him and the Qaumi family when he landed in jail. It appears Qaumi did not feel the same way.

WHO IS ENCHANTED?

Police are investigating a mysterious person known as “Enchanted” who advised one of Abuzar Sultani’s Murder Crew gang members to dispose of evidence after Pasquale Barbaro’s murder.

Barbaro was shot dead by Sultani and Murder Crew assassins, Joshua Baines, outside the home of construction identity George Alex in Earlwood November 14, 2016. Mr Alex is not accused of any wrongdoing.

Two days later, Baines received an encrypted BlackBerry message from “Enchanted” who advised him on how to dispose of evidence that would link him to the shooting, according to the crown case statement aired in the murder trial.

Sultani pleaded guilty to murdering Barbaro and Baines was found guilty of the same offence.

According to the statement, Enchanted wrote to Baines: “Throw black vest and any fluoro and King (Gee) uniform and ski masks.”

The person who sent the text message could be charged with perverting the course of justice and accessory after the fact to murder, according to legal experts.

But now it is a question of who is Enchanted? According to the court documents, Enchanted is now under investigation by police.
