Zaebriel Orayenza is about to embark on the biggest musical adventure of her life.
The 10-year-old from Plumpton leaves for South Korea this weekend, where she will spend four months touring with the cast of the School of Rockmusical.
Orayenza has been cast as Tomika, who she said was shy “at the start but somewhere in the show she shows her hidden talents”.
“She’s kind of like confetti, when you open the box it’s like, surprise!” she said.
School of Rock follows a struggling rock musician who disguises himself as a substitute teacher at a prestigious school to earn some money after being kicked out of his band, and he forms a band of his fifth-grade students — including Tomika — with the hope of winning an upcoming battle of the bands competition.
Orayenza was not even born when the hit movie School of Rock, which the musical is based on, was released in 2003, but the powerhouse vocalist is ready to put her own spin on shy singer Tomika.
The South Korean tour will be Orayenza’s first long stint away from home, and although she will miss her family, including her parents and three brothers, she said she was looking forward to the shows and eating the “different types of food” in South Korea.
School of Rock is also Orayenza’s first major role although she has been singing and dancing for most of her life.
“The first time my mum noticed I could sing was when I was two years old at home,” she said.
“I was singing Girl On Fire (by Alicia Keys), she did a quick video and I think that’s when she noticed.”
After joining a few local productions, Orayenza auditioned for School of Rock and said finding out she had made the cut was the “most happy day of my life”.
“I was so happy,” she said.
“I was screaming, my mum and my dad were jumping everywhere.”
Orayenza will also join the cast for the Sydney shows of School of Rock, which opens at Capitol Theatre in November.
