SURF’S UP
This school holidays, a wave of surf fans will soon be riding into Prospect with Wet‘n’Wild opening a surf school at for the September holidays.
Wet‘n’Wild’s wave pool will host surf lessons with specialised surfing coaches from September 27 from 7am to 9am daily.
Surfing NSW chief executive Luke Madden said he wanted surfing to be available to more than just people who lived on the coastline.
“This is a great development which will open up our sport to a whole new cohort of kids,” he said.
“It takes surf culture and its healthy lifestyle to greater Sydney’s heartland.”
Surfing NSW’s chairman John O’Neill said the development was particularly exciting considering surfing was recently accepted into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
“Over time, we expect some great talent to emerge from this broader catchment area,” he said. “After all, three-time world champion Mick Fanning grew up in Penrith.”
The wave pool allows coaches to control the nature and difficulty of the waves, meaning that they can cater to all levels of surfers.
Sport Minister Stuart Ayres said people of all ages would now get to experience a safe, exciting wave in the heart of western Sydney.
Up to 3500 people are expected to take part in lessons between September and April.
Lessons will cater to beginners, children, school groups and corporate groups. Prices start from $50.
