Thomas Mate: Ropes Crossing man charged over alleged commercial drug import

A man has been charged with allegedly importing almost 300kg of the drug ice, uncovered in a major nationwide police operation

A western Sydney man is one of more than 100 people charged as part of a major Australian Federal Police operation that has been labelled the “sting of century”.

Police allege Michael Thomas Mate, 32, imported hundreds of kilograms of the drug ‘ice’ and was found with a large sum of cash at his Ropes Crossing home.

He faces charges of importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamine and engaging in conduct involving proceeds of crime.

Court documents revealed Mate allegedly imported 270kg of ice between February 26 and May 24.

Police further allege Mate engaged in conduct involving money believed to be the proceeds of crime, to the value of $400,000.

Mate’s case was briefly mentioned at Mt Druitt Local Court on Tuesday and he was refused bail to face Parramatta Local Court next week.
