Arrest over fatal stabbing of Toongabbie man

A Queensland man charged with the stabbing murder of Toongabbie man Shane Naylor argued with the deceased over allegedly stolen jewellery, police claim.

Emergency services were called to Valeria St, Toongabbie, about 6.30pm on January 7, where a man was found suffering stab wounds.

Blacktown police provided first aid to the man before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

However, he died at the scene.

The man was later identified as 45-year-old Shane Naylor.

Following extensive inquiries by Strike Force Haskett, a 57-year-old man was arrested in Queensland on Monday, with assistance from the Queensland Police Service.

Detectives believe the man, who has not been named, was an acquaintance of Mr Naylor prior to his death, Blacktown detective acting inspector Adam Wilson said on Tuesday.

“He was an associate,” Det A/Insp Wilson said.

“I won‘t go as far as to say they were friends, but they knew each other through a third party.

“A common friend.”

Det A/Insp Wilson said police would allege the man arrested by police had believed Mr Naylor had taken stolen jewellery or money from him prior to his death.

The pair had allegedly argued about the goods before the alleged stabbing.

The man, who has not been named, is believed to have resided in Queensland for a number of years.

On Tuesday, he was taken to Brisbane Magistrates Court on a NSW arrest warrant, where NSW Police detectives were granted his extradition to Tweed Heads Police Station.

Det A/Insp Wilson confirmed the man will be returned to Sydney where he will likely appear before the Sydney Supreme Court.

The arrest comes after a months-long investigation by Strike Force Haskett, a unit comprised of Blacktown detectives with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
