Police are appealing for witnesses after a 13-year-old was savagely attacked by a dog while playing at a park. His injuries were so bad he required surgery.

What do you do when a dog attacks you?

Police are appealing for information after a 13-year-old was mauled by a dog in a popular park on New Year’s Eve.

The Quakers Hill teen had been playing at Douglas Siding Reserve around 4.30pm when he was attacked by what is believed to have been an American Staffy.

The dog has been described to police as a brown/grey with a white chest.

Police said it is believed the dog chased the boy before biting him several times on his arms and legs.

A couple witnessed the incident and came to his aid, removing the dog and rendering first aid.

The 13-year-old was so badly injured he needed surgery on his left forearm at Nepean Hospital.

His father posted to Facebook asking for help to identify the dog’s owners.

He claims the owners took the dog away before returning with Band Aids and then told him to go home.

In the post, his father said “He came home with bleeding wounds everywhere and torn bloodied clothes....I spent the evening and night in hospital and he has had surgery to the deep wounds.”

Police are investigating and are asking for any witnesses to contact Riverstone Police or Crime Stoppers.
