Police have confirmed the violent Blacktown home invasion — where one man was hit in the head with an axe and two men were shot — was not a random attack.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon spoke on the Stephen St incident this afternoon, in which an intruder was shot by police.

Two intruders entered the home at 4.45am this morning, while two men and a woman were inside. Police arrived at the scene and located a man suffering a gun shot wound to the thigh and another man with a wound to the head, believed to have been caused by an axe.

Officers from Blacktown Area Command located a 33 year old man in the backyard of the property and confronted him, before shooting the intruder in the wrist. He was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he remains under police guard.

The second intruder was later located nearby the property and taken to Blacktown police station, where he is assisting police with their investigation.

Three people remain in hospital.

A neighbour who lives three doors down from the scene said he “heard a loud noise which sounded like gun shots and a woman screaming” around 4.30am.

The firearm was located at the scene, however police are still searching for the axe.

Both intruders are expected to be charged and face court at a later date. The officer who fired the shot is currently undergoing questioning as part of the investigation.

A crime scene was established around Stephen St and the street has only recently being reopened.

The critical investigation continues, as three people remain in hospital.
