Plans for a multi-storey boarding house accommodating more than 70 residents will be considered by Blacktown Council.

Designcorp Architects have lodged an application for a $6.3 million ‘new generation’ boarding house at Carinya St.

The five-storey boarding house would have 57 self-contained single and double rooms, a manager’s unit and two levels of basement parking for 30 cars and 12 motorbikes.

Three rooms would cater for residents with a disability and a communal room would be located on each level of the property.

In keeping with the ‘new generation model’, each room would have a kitchenette and bathroom facilities.

A social impact statement submitted to the council said the development would offer affordable housing to singles, retirees, students, professionals and young couples.

“If designed correctly and proposed in the right locations, [new generation boarding houses] can provide an essential form of affordable and temporary rental accommodation for a wide range of tenants,” planning documents read.

The development would target students, young working singles and couples looking for an alternative to a long-term lease due to the nature of their work or studies.

“The boarding house would cater for young professionals, students, single people and the like who might otherwise not be able to afford to live in the area,” documents showed.

According to the documents, the boarding house would have an off-site manager that would ensure the boarding house did not have “any discernible effect on residents of the building … or any surrounding or nearby properties”.

The development would be an 800-metre walk to Blacktown station and 500-metre walk to Westpoint shopping centre.
