Food authorities have released the latest list of NSW eateries to have breached food safety standards. See if your local cafe or restaurant has been named and shamed.

Food safety inspector’s hygiene hack goes viral on TikTok

Sushi restaurants, fast food chains and bakeries are among the latest NSW eateries to be named and shamed over food safety and hygiene breaches.

Latest figures have revealed a staggering 263 businesses received infringements from council food inspectors during 2021 with hotspot suburbs including Chatswood and Raymond Terrace.

The figures come from a ‘name and shame list’ published by the NSW Food Authority that lists businesses that have received infringements relating to food standards.

Sushi restaurants were a common feature in the list.

Many of the fines stemmed from poor hygiene practises with common offences including failing to store food in a way that would prevent contamination, and not taking measures to prevent pests from entering venues.

The north shore suburb of Chatswood earned the unenviable ranking as the postcode with the most number of venues fined with 14 issued infringements 2021.

This was followed by Raymond Terrace with 10, and Bankstown, Campsie and Marrickville each with nine.

Willoughby Council, which takes in the Chatswood postcode, partly attributed the large number of fines in the suburb to high inspection rates by council staff.

“Council believes (other) factors include lack of skills and knowledge in new businesses that have replaced those that did not survive the lockdown due to Covid, skilled staff being laid-off and other cost-saving measures, as well as not being aware of food safety standards and legislative responsibilities,” a spokeswoman said.

Despite the high number of infringements, the NSW Food Authority said the total number of statewide infringements were down on previous years partly due to the combination of bushfires, floods and the Covid pandemic impacting the ability of councils to conduct normal food surveillance operations.

During the 2020-21 financial year, a total of 44,924 inspections were undertaken in the retail and food service sector across NSW with 97 per cent of business meeting compliance standards.
