Mt Druitt man charged over $145,000 tax scam

A Mt Druitt man will face court over his alleged role in a $145,000 tax refund scam.

The 33-year-old was arrested during a raid on his Mt Druitt home at about 7am on July 25 after police investigations into a tax refund scheme targeting travelling workers.

Police allege the man posed as a tax agent and defrauded customers of their tax refunds, to the sum of more than $145,000.

Police say the man, who is not a registered tax agent, charged a $100 fee for his services and on numerous occasions pocketed the customer’s tax refund, many of whom were in Australia on working holidays.

He was charged with two counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and dealing with identity information to commit an indictable offence.

The man was granted strict bail and is due to appear at Mt Druitt Local Court on August 7.
