A woman who was severely burnt in a Marayong house fire when trying to rescue her beloved pet dog has been praised for her bravery.

Renee Sharkey, 34, suffered critical injuries when her Amos Pl home was engulfed by fire just after 12.30am.

Renee and her mother, Marianne, 64, were able to escape the blaze, however, she was burnt after returning to the inferno to rescue to American Staffordshire Terrier Dexter, who was trapped inside.

She suffered burns to 10 per cent of her body, including her face, arm and airway.

Speaking to the Advocate, Marianne Sharkey described the scene as “frightening”.

“We were calling for Dexter to come out but he couldn’t because of the flames,” she said.

“After Renee went back in, all of a sudden there were flames everywhere.

“It was so scary. She came out with the dog and just screamed and went into hysterics.

“Her hair was alight and her jacket was on fire.

“I can’t get the image out of my head.

“She’s very courageous. I’m just glad we all got out okay.”

Ms Sharkey said her daughter was expected to make a full recovery and was being treated at Concord Hospital’s Burns Unit after being transferred from Westmead Hospital.

The house sustained significant damage, with early investigations suggesting an electrical fault caused the ignition in the lounge room.

The Sharkeys were asleep when the blaze broke out, with a loud bang in the lounge room alerting them to the fire.

“You never think it is going to happen to you,” Ms Sharkey said.

“We’ve lost the lounge, tables, cabinets – it’s all gone. The dining room might be okay, but everything inside is smoke damaged.

“I’m not sure if our insurance will cover it.”

One neighbour said the blaze had shocked the tight-knit cul-de-sac.

“Little Renee went back in to save the dog and sadly she was burnt,” he said.

“They’re nice people. It’s a real shame.”

Another neighbour said he woke to a loud banging noise and saw smoke billowing from the house.

“I saw smoke in the backyard but didn’t see any fire at all,” he said.

“We are very close to the next house so I was worried about a possible explosion. That was the main thing I was worried about.”
