A recycling truck had to dump its load in a park in Mt Druitt yesterday after a rubbish fire onboard.
The smoky situation unfolded just after 12.30pm on Monday, when the driver was alerted to smoke coming from smouldering rubbish inside the compactor.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the driver was forced to dump the load in a safe place at Rupertswood Park, off Brock St, to prevent the spread of the blaze throughout the truck.
Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW at Huntingwood extinguished the blaze and the rubbish was removed shortly after using a bobcat.
The spokesman said garbage truck fires were not uncommon and could be sparked by a car battery or cigarette butt.
A Blacktown Council spokesperson said the truck was not a council truck, with the last of the waste material removed on Tuesday morning.
The incident comes less than two weeks after a recycling truck was forced to dump its load in a street in West Ryde after a fire broke out in its tip tray.
The exact cause of this blaze is not yet known, but it is believed it came from a recycling bin.
The truck was not damaged in the incident.
