A western Sydney crime gang member started two fights with inmates while in custody for a violent attack on his partner, which killed their unborn baby girl.

Alameddine crime clan member Ahmed Karim, 24, appeared in the Blacktown Local Court on Thursday, June 20, via videolink, where he was sentenced for two separate fights with different men while in custody in 2023.

The court was told Karim was in custody on remand after bail was refused after a violent attack on his pregnant wife, which resulted in the death of their unborn baby.

He was sentenced for this in the NSW District Court on June 3, 2024, to a minimum non-parole period of eight years, with a maximum sentence of 12 years.

Lawyer Abdul Saddik told the Blacktown Local Court on Thursday this case was “highly publicised” and had put a “target on (Karim’s) back” while in custody.

Mr Saddik said this was a contributing factor to Karim’s actions, which included a fight with an inmate in a wheelchair and with his leg in a cast on June 29, 2023.

The court was told the inmate, described as a “threat” to Karim, had wheeled himself into the same area and stood up, despite his injury, before Karim punched him in the head.

Later, on July 5, Karim did the same thing to a different inmate.

Mr Saddik told the court his client had taken an anger management course days before the second assault, but said the later offence did not start from anger management issues.

A hand-written note from Karim, tendered to the court, stated he was segregated from other inmates and reprimanded after the fights, with a ban on visits and phone calls for two weeks for each fight.

Karim pleaded guilty to two charges of common assault.

Magistrate Aaron Tang sentenced Karim to a two-year Community Corrections Order, though he will remain in custody serving his prison sentence from earlier in June.

A third charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, which was listed for mention, was adjourned until June 25.
